Addicts Who Live in the Moment May Get Most Benefit From Certain Kinds of Treatment

Addicts Who Live in the Moment May Get Most Benefit From Certain Kinds of Treatment
A simple cognitive test may be able to predict how well an individual struggling with addiction will respond to certain treatments, according to a study led by an addiction expert. The human instinct to choose instant gratification, such as a drug high, over a later benefit, such as good health — known as future or delay discounting — is strong in people with drug dependencies. An important component of addiction is failure to exert self-control in recognition of future consequences. In a new study, a team of researchers has found an unexpected pattern that may provide hope for tailoring addiction treatments.

Smartphone app helps support recovery after treatment for alcoholism
A smartphone application appears to help patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) reduce risky drinking days compared to patients who received usual care after leaving treatment in a residential program. Alcohol dependence is a lifetime psychiatric diagnosis with relapse rates similar to other chronic illnesses. Continuing care for AUDs has been associated with better outcomes, but patients leaving treatment for AUDs typically are not offered aftercare.

Boosting self-esteem prevents health problems for seniors
The importance of boosting self-esteem is normally associated with the trials and tribulations of adolescence. But new research shows that it’s even more important for older adults to maintain and improve upon those confidence levels as they enter their twilight years. “Improving self-esteem provides real health benefits in seniors,” says the lead author. “The ultimate solution may be to prevent self esteem from declining.”

How Specific Goals Can Better Boost Your Happiness

#trauma #crisis #traumatized

GPS for the Soul – The Huffington Post
How Specific Goals Can Better Boost Your Happiness
Setting a goal to make someone smile today will do more to boost your own happiness than setting a general goal to make someone happy, according to a new study.

Researchers from Stanford University, the University of Houston and Harvard University found that making concrete goals that can actually objectively be achieved can do more to boost happiness than making more abstract goals.

In fact, “discrepancies between aspirations and reality can be critical factors that, in extreme cases, may even lead the act of helping to eventually becoming a source of unhappiness,” study researcher Melanie Rudd, an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Houston, said in a statement.

That’s because if you are expecting to see positive results by engaging in endless prosocial behaviors, but those results never come to fruition, this could eventually lead to something called “helper burnout,” researchers explained. Therefore, having a more concrete goal to accomplish could help expectations to be better tamed — leading to less disappointment and burnout.

The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, included several experiments. In one of the experiments, 50 people completed two surveys, taken a day apart. In the first survey, the participants were instructed to perform an act of kindness; some of the participants were specifically instructed to “Do something to make someone else smile,” while others were instructed to “Do something to make someone else happy.”

Then, a day later, the participants took another survey, where they were asked to detail what their act of kindness was. The researchers also gauged their own personal happiness levels, as well as how effective they thought their acts of kindness were at either eliciting happiness or a smile.

People who were assigned specifically to make someone smile felt like they “created more personal happiness with their act than did those in the happy goal condition,” researchers reported in the study.

In another experiment, researchers had 127 people undergo a similar test to the previous one, where they had to either make someone happy or make someone smile. However, the follow-up survey administered to the participants in this experiment also included this question: “How well did the outcome of the act you performed meet your expectations of accomplishing your assigned goal?” They were also asked about how specific their goal was that they had in mind as they were performing their act of kindness.

Researchers found that the participants asked to make someone smile had a more specific goal in mind as they were performing their act of kindness, compared with people who were asked to make someone happy. In addition, those asked to make someone smiled “perceived that the outcome of their act better met their expectations for accomplishing their prosocial goal than did the happy goal participants.”

And just like in the previous experiment, those assigned to making someone smile felt like they created more personal happiness than those assigned to make someone happy.

“The boost to personal happiness brought about by the more concretely-framed prosocial goal was driven by the actual outcome of the goal-directed act better meeting one’s expectations for accomplishing the prosocial goal,” they wrote.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder May Reflect a Propensity for Bad Habits

#trauma #crisis #traumatized

Addiction News — ScienceDaily
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder May Reflect a Propensity for Bad Habits
Two new studies shed light on the propensity for habit formation in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). These studies suggest that a tendency to develop habits, i.e., the compulsive component of the disorder, may be a core feature of the disorder rather than a consequence of irrational beliefs. In other words, instead of washing one’s hands because of the belief that they are contaminated, some people may develop concerns about hand contamination as a consequence of a recurring urge to wash their hands.

Learning to Wait In the Dark: A Holy Saturday Reflection

#trauma #crisis #traumatized

GPS for the Soul – The Huffington Post
Learning to Wait In the Dark: A Holy Saturday Reflection
Holy Saturday reminds me that one has to learn how to be Christian. When I first came to Christian faith, the day meant nothing to me. It was the blank day between the high dramas of Good Friday and Easter, the day when nothing happened. Jesus was dead and buried. Everyone had gone home to get some rest. In the morning he would rise triumphant from the grave but meanwhile there was nothing to do. The church service — if there was one — lasted no more than fifteen minutes. It seemed rude to go shopping after that, or to check the movie listings. So I puttered the day away, rattling around the house doing nothing much while the clock ticked toward Easter. Holy Saturday was a placeholder, an empty set of parentheses, a waiting room for a train that would not come until morning.

Later, when I became a priest, Holy Saturday was the day when members of the congregation came to the church for private confession. There were never more than four or five of them, who showed up at discreet intervals so they did not even see each other’s cars in the parking lot. The list of names changed every year. Whatever was going on with them, the general confession they said with everyone else on Sunday mornings was not helping. They needed to find their own words for what they had done, or what had been done to them. They needed to say those words out loud so they could hear them without anyone else’s words covering them up.

My only job was to listen, pronouncing some of the sweetest words in the prayer book at the end: “Now there is rejoicing in heaven; for you were lost, and are found; you were dead, and are now alive in Christ Jesus our Lord. Go in peace. The Lord has put away all your sins.” After that I waited in the church for the next person to come, which was often as long as an hour. Sometimes I lay down on a pew, which was how I began to imagine Jesus lying on a stone ledge in the dark. I had been to Jerusalem, so I knew how tombs looked in those days: low holes in rock walls, with narrow bunks inside to hold the dead bodies until the flesh on them was gone and the bones could be gathered up for safe-keeping.

That was where Jesus spent Holy Saturday: in a dark hole in the ground, doing absolutely nothing. It was the Sabbath, after all. His friends had worked hard to make sure he was laid to rest before the sun went down. Then they went home to rest too, because that was what they did on Saturdays. Once it was clear that there was nothing they could do to secure their own lives or the lives of those they loved, they rested in the presence of the Maker of All Life and waited to see what would happen next.

Though Christians speak of “witnesses to the resurrection,” there were no witnesses. Everyone who saw Jesus alive again saw him after. As many years as I have been listening to Easter sermons, I have never heard anyone talk about that part. Resurrection is always announced with Easter lilies, the sound of trumpets, bright streaming light. But it did not happen that way. Whatever happened to Jesus between Saturday and Sunday, it happened in the dark, with the smell of damp stone and dug earth in the air. It happened where no one but him could talk about it later, and he did not talk about it — at least not so anyone could explain it to anyone else.

That is what Holy Saturday has taught me about being Christian. Between the great dramas of life, there is almost always a time of empty waiting — with nothing to do and no church service to help — a time when it is necessary to come up with your own words and see how they sound with no other sounds to cover them up. If you are willing to rest in this Sabbath, where you cannot see your hand in front of your face and none of your self-protective labors can do you one bit of good, then you may come as close to the Christ as you will ever get — there in that quiet cave where you wait to see how the Maker of All Life will choose to come to you in the dark.

All work and no play for children: Losing their childhood and their happiness?

#trauma #crisis #traumatized

Relationships News — ScienceDaily
All work and no play for children: Losing their childhood and their happiness?
A UK Department for Health-commissioned survey in 2004 concluded that 1 in 10 British children aged 5-16 are diagnosed with mental disorders. Childhood stress, psychological problems and self-abuse are increasing. Gone are the hazy days when kids could run free all day and play. Through play “children develop… an emergent sense of competence … feelings of ‘belonging’, ‘usefulness’, and subsequent well-being”. When deprived of play, children lack social connectivity and have less ‘mental wellness’.

Spring Cleaning for the Soul

#trauma #crisis #traumatized

GPS for the Soul – The Huffington Post
Spring Cleaning for the Soul
Change is hard for everyone. This is especially true in our personal lives. I have watched professionals who are in complete control at work come to a frozen, terrified standstill when asked to eat a vegetable. Why does this happen? The answer can be complex, but in simplest terms, the desire for growth bumps against lots of emotionally-charged obstacles and rationalizations, aka the “ration-of-lies.” Ironically, we tend to resist what is best for our highest good. But there is good news: The arrival of spring is a time of year when nature provides you with some extra momentum to make lasting changes.

In spring, you have the forces of nature on your side drawing you, and all living things, out of hibernation, out of yourself and into renewal and new life. The annual “spring cleaning” instinct perfectly illustrates the desire for a fresh start, to change the air and clear out the clutter. Spring fever pushes you out the door and inspires you to get moving. So why not make the most of it while you have the wind at your back?

Where do you start? If you are feeling ready to make a change, small or large, here are five ways to clear out the clutter and put more “spring” in your life:

1. Start from where you are.
In order to know what needs refreshing, you need to know where you are. It is impossible to chart a course towards personal growth without first looking within to know what isn’t working or what wants to rise up for healing. In my practice, I use a self-assessment tool to take that real time snapshot. In a few simple steps, you will have a clear illustration of your satisfaction in 12 distinct areas of your life, dig deeper to understand what is behind them and take the first steps towards greater happiness and fulfillment. Wherever you choose to begin, be honest with yourself about the issue, the obstacles and your readiness to make changes.

2. Spend quiet time in nature.
Two key words: quiet and nature. So often, I see people barreling through nature with headphones on, running or walking to finish that last mile, paying no mind to what is around them. But spending quiet, unhurried time in nature (not just passing through it) can yield many health benefits to your body, mind and spirit. Try this: Take time out during a walk or hike to stop and observe your surroundings, close your eyes and listen to nature’s sounds, or meditate while doing some deep breathing. This triggers a relaxation response in the body, which reduces stress and quiets the mind. And when you connect with something larger than yourself, your problems and concerns will seem smaller and new insights can rise to the surface.

3. You are not a salmon, stop swimming upstream!
At the first women’s workshop I attended, I was sitting in quiet meditation as we opened the session. The image of a salmon swimming upstream floated into my mind. It was trying to get up over a small waterfall when it suddenly fell backwards and swam away downstream, with the current. At first, this seemed sad; he had given up. Then I wondered had I given up? I stayed with the image and realized that the fish was fine, happily swimming downstream with the current, not against it. I realized, of course, that the fish was me. I was ready to stop resisting. I was ready to live differently, and the little salmon helped me to see that. Next time you meditate or sit quietly, ask yourself what you are resisting? Where would going downstream take you? What ideas, people or opportunities have you missed in your haste to fight the current?

4. Leave room for surprises (you can’t control everything, sorry).
My favorite lesson about this came in a round-a-bout way at a nature preserve near my home where I spend a great deal of time. Last spring, my children came with me and made a game of looking for the numbered sign posts that lined the path. After a few walks, we had discovered all 17 with the exception of one, number nine. We searched high and low but found nothing. We concluded it didn’t exist or was buried somewhere under the leaves.

At that time, I was looking for answers in my personal life that were not coming either, and I was feeling utterly frustrated. Not finding number nine (coincidentally my birthday) felt like the universe’s way of laughing at my attempts to control anything. Then one day, I went for a walk alone at the preserve. I was lost in my thoughts when something flickered in the far corner of my vision. I stopped and looked back thinking I’d seen a small animal or bird. But instead, there it was, plain as day, number nine. Just like that.

I got the message: Neither marker number nine nor the answers to my life questions were going to be found by looking harder. Both were ultimately revealed only when I stopped looking and instead went about living my life in the direction I wanted to go. Is there a situation or circumstance you are trying to control that needs some room to breathe? How could you go about it differently? Remember, change requires patience, so give yourself time.

5. Clean out the old to make room for the new.
This may not be a threatening concept when you are cleaning out a closet, but it can become a real obstacle when talking about how we live. When I work with a client, I can usually sense if they are likely to succeed at their goals or not. Those who are ready to honestly face and let go of what they are doing and how they are living are much more likely to succeed than those who fear change or are holding on to the status quo to the exclusion of growth. Ask yourself what you are holding on to that no longer serves you. What would happen if you let go of it? What would be lost? What new and wonderful things might come into your life in its place? What holds you back? Even if you are not ready to jump, just the acknowledgement that you are not ready to do what you know is a big step towards owning your choices.

Happy Spring!

Internet use may cut retirees’ depression
Spending time online has the potential to ward off depression among retirees, particularly among those who live alone, according to research. Authors report that internet use reduced the probability of a depressed state by 33 percent among their study sample. Late-life depression affects between 5 and 10 million Americans age 50 and older. This new study shows that the Internet offers older Americans a chance to overcome the social and spatial boundaries that are believed to fuel depression.

The first UK study of the use of ketamine intravenous infusions in people with treatment-resistant depression has been carried out. ‘Ketamine is a promising new antidepressant which works in a different way to existing antidepressants. We wanted to see whether it would be safe if given repeatedly, and whether it would be practical in an NHS setting. We especially wanted to check that repeated infusions didn’t cause cognitive problems,’ explains the principal investigator.

Brain changes associated with casual marijuana use in young adults: More ‘joints’ equal more damage

Brain changes associated with casual marijuana use in young adults: More ‘joints’ equal more damage
